A pair of mid-century diamond cluster earrings with a subtle star motif as a reticent decoration behind the cluster arrangement.
Stud earrings of this size are not the everyday go-to pair for most, hence modern jewellery does not produce many studs that are highly visible.
Straits Chinese or Peranakan stud earrings are the opposite. Very seldom do we come across small studs and most of them are this size, spanning at least 1cm across. They are mostly dimensional like this pair, with its diamonds arranged in a half dome, on three levels.
Common appearances are the fully fleshed-out ‘bintang’ or star, making this pair as geometric as it is a star. Also, the diamonds appear more dazzling than diamonds set in an actual fine-drawn star, perfect if you want a star but not the pokes!
The nice touch in this pair is its illusion of size. The studs look very prominent even though the diamonds are set over a stud of only 1cm. The levelled arrangement of the diamonds give it girth despite its petite frame. The diamonds weigh about 2 carats in total.
These are authentic Straits Chinese earrings, with the traditional screw back ear posts.
