Earth 20th century gold bracelet set with rubies and diamonds in 22k.
This is a Straits Chinese traditional bracelet, its taxonomy is a family of lace-like bracelets of varying height.
These bracelets look intricate because of their repetitive ball-and-link component formations, each component is linked to the other by hand.
This one is 3cm tall, a 7-ball stack is rare.
These ‘lace’ golden bracelets were and are sought after for being in-between bracelets and bangles. They have the stature of a bangle or cuff but the flow of a bracelet.
This particular motif is quite like Etruscan jewelry, the gold work resembles bead-work that when taken together looks like a whole lot of work.
The pendant is a charm which would be considered oversized by Victorian standards, but not by Straits Chinese decorum.
At 2cm, the charm is designed to be removable and worn separately if preferred.
All the gems in this bracelet situate on this ‘lucky’ pendant, red rubies and rose cut diamonds.
The biggest diamond is not an actual rose cut but a flat step cut hexagon diamond weighing 1 carat, unusual and flawless.
The pendant itself is a lovely jewel. If you flip behind, you will see how the red and white stones are actually caught in a layered network of gold threads, like a drizzle of honey on a waffle.
Much beyond its impressive visual self, this Straits Chinese bracelet is enduring from craftsmanship to collectibility, what we deem as 可遇不可求, or “desired but not sought”.
