Mid century 20k diamond studded bracelet comprising 55 prong-set sparkly diamonds, of a Straits Chinese provenance.

The diamonds weigh approximately 3ctw.

Like much of retro Peranakan jewellery, the diamonds are set on small, very tall bezels. It is through varying the height the craftsmen were able to create very delicately bling jewellery in a very compact, robust form.

In fact this Art Deco piece is almost structural. The three-part articulating centrepiece will cleave to the curve of the wrist, since its underneath is forged like a bridge, with underlying support and design, while the rest of the bracelet is made up of individual, petite box links.

It is this deliberate craftsmanship that allows the bracelet to stand out, especially since in the old days Peranakan ladies styled them with very several bracelets and bangles.

The clasp is styled as a mini watch clasp. Like earlier Peranakan bracelets, it is lithe craftsmanship that allows the bracelet to freely articulate, so the entire piece, including the centrepiece, folds miraculously small. It is this feminine quality of Peranakan jewellery that softens its otherwise very gold and sometimes overly splendorous personality.

The studded centrepiece spans 5.5cm; the bracelet is slightly over 6" (petite wrist alert).

Modern eyes would now regard this bracelet as bling well contained. The feeling of wearing many diamonds gracefully is possible with this piece. Wearing the piece you can pick up the sentiment is not so much a retro fashion tribute but celluloid black-white glamour.
