GIA Peranakan Rose Cut Diamond Ring Vintage
Antique rose cut diamond ring set with a 0.98ct rose cut diamond in 22k.
Likely to be much older, this Straits Chinese diamond ring has a near flawless pear shaped diamond, a rather rare thing for an old rose cut diamond.
Measuring 8.5mm by 6.5mm, the rose cut diamond is expertly held by bezel set prongs. While rose cut diamonds are flat, the diamond is held tall. This technique of pushing the (rose cut) diamond as high as possibly safe is a Peranakan craftsmanship. Very few master craftsmen can do this today.
This is also how we can identify the age and make of the ring. The split shoulder is a simple design shared with Victorian rings, again to hold the diamond as far out to catch light.
The diamond shape is more pear than teardrop, which gives it a ‘plump’ or wide face as a solitaire ring with no other accent stones.
Because all the carat weight is spread at the top, the rose cut diamond is and looks big on the finger.
The ring is extremely attractive on any finger, because while we are used to diamonds with facets, the fewer faceted rose cut exudes a strangely minimalist heirloom aura. It is possible!
