19th century Straits Chinese necklace set with Old Mine cut and Old Single cut diamonds weighing approximately 3.54ctw in 20k.
A lightweight period piece possibly made during the Victorian era.
Clavicle length, the earlier pieces of this pierced work genre of Straits Chinese necklaces were always short, coquettish.
As necklines lowered, necklaces also lengthened.
At 15.5″, this piece is not only clavicle length, but its weight is refined to its proportion. That is why it is possible the whole ‘collar’ can collapse to a neat heap in your hand.
The necklace articulates at two points and will glide smoothly at the neckline, like a lace collar.
Later pieces sometimes (and many times) lack such refinement, since many of these necklaces were handmade to personal tastes by Ceylonese craftsmen at home, under the watchful eyes of the matriarch.
It requires a keen eye to tell a piece that has been balanced very well, setting it apart from the more common efforts, and only after seeing hundreds.
This is one such jewel, set with the 19th century’s antique diamonds, on pierced work filigree necklaces which are amongst the best in the world, and still a secret…
The pierced gold work is so splendid the necklace looks as good from the back as it does from the front (last photo is of the back), another telling trademark of the work of old masters.
The ‘collar’ spans 3.8cm thickest (including the drop) and 8.5cm across.
The biggest diamond in the middle drop is a 0.4ct Old Mine cut.
