Old European Diamond Berry Pendant Chinese 18k
Mid-century gold pendant set with Old European cut diamonds weighing 1.2ctw in 18k.
The berry or fruit cluster is a Straits Chinese classic, this one is mid size at 3cm.
These Chinese Art Nouveau pendants were made from the 19th century all the way into two decades after the second war. When pendant sizes shrink, these very visible pendants also disappeared from the making.
This particular cluster belonged to the last of its long era, yet its fiery diamonds are much older.
By the mid 20th century, diamonds were held in little ‘cups’ (instead of prong work), giving any grouping of diamonds the illusion of a generous size since they were spaced apart, individually held, and displayed at differing heights.
The semi-realistic pendant has a gentle dangle at two points, so the pendant ‘nods’ with movement and is not stiff.
The pendant measures 3cm by 2cm.
