Straits Antique Diamond Pendant

Early 20th century diamond pendant set with old cut diamonds weighing 4.15ctw in 20k.

This Straits Chinese pendant is typical in its motif/style except its houses very fiery diamonds, a mixture of Old European and transitional cuts.

While its motif is not uncommon, its girth and grade of diamonds single out the piece to be a treasure, already an heirloom in its own time.

The ‘hanging’ fruit-flower basket adapts Victorian Giardinetti jewelry, though it is treasured for its emblematic Anglo-Sino authenticity.

The latter would be seen in having the central full flower itself a cluster ring, or one side of a diamond earring – every aspect of this pendant could be broken down into a piece of Straits Chinese jewelry.

Its parts are laid out deliberately to derive its wholesome form.

The pendant is 4cm by 2.4cm, its very white old diamonds framed in old-time pierced work that is both very fine and sculptural in one expression.

There is nothing ornate in its Art Nouveau form, or overly decorous, since the presence of old diamonds of superior quality is the grand gesture.

These exemplar pieces of period jewelry are moving keepsakes as they win over repetition – no matter how many we see, antique or vintage, the ones in full flavour are still a smattering.
