1930s solid gold large hair pin in 22k.
This is a Straits Chinese large flat hair pin measuring 11cm.
This is an early ‘primitive’ design.
As far as Straits designs go, an ornament meant specifically for the hair, that is neither set with stones or carved in openwork, is more uncommon than the rest.
The ultra flat, smoothened surface is not a typical Peranakan delight (preferring filigree and curves), but it is a sophisticated vanity accessory.
A flat ‘weave’ marked by simple etchings, the pin looks two-dimensional.
Its teeth with take a thin or thick weft of hair and the gold has suspension, many vintage hair pins may not!
A hundred years later its form looks even sleeker.
Compared to fancier hair pins, this one looks fluid and is functional, extremely wearable through our errand-filled lives.
If made today, it fulfils the modern art object. Once worn on the hair, it will capture attention.
