Mine Cut Diamond Ring Antique 20k Chinese

1900s Straits gold ring set with diamonds in 20k.

The delicate gold work on this ring dates to early 20th century, or late 19th century, the scalloped cups tightly woven together through finely carved gold work.

The centre mine cut diamond is 0.5ct, super clean and white which is lucky for an old mine cut.

The surround diamonds are rose cut diamonds, where these are the very early hand cut rose cut diamonds. They are splices of diamond, very hard to set and only possible by old Straits Chinese jewellery techniques of almost ‘invisible’ prong work.

Then, and now, these gold rings are regarded as finery not by how heavy they are, but by how finely thin the craftsman could get his gold down to.

Hence these early lightweight rings are very collectible for their era authentic ‘gossamer’ beauty, and usually pieces with fiery diamonds as this are hard to surface.

The very roundness of this piece suggest this could be once a gold button. Many Straits pieces of jewellery began their life as buttons! This is due to our buttonless blousons (kebaya). But the band and sentiment of the ring suggest this conversion was likely to be very early on, not a recent conversion at all.

And it is this roundness, at an oddly big size, that makes this ring very appealing. At 14mm, the round flower will cover most or all the finger.
