1900s 3-pin kerosang brooch set in 22k.
This Straits Chinese set is an authentic period piece.
This is an all-gold set, with no diamonds and showing off supple relief carving on gold.
Carving and etching on a thin sheet of high karat gold is a highly skilled technique in Straits jewellery craftsmanship. It is even more precious today, since we find few who will properly practise this.
The carving is a phoenix or bird in foliage. All the details you see at the front of the pins begin from a sheet of gold as plain as its reverse (see third photo).
A ‘horizontal’ motif set as this will suit broader or taller body frames, since the brooch will wear rather visibly across the body.
This is one of the more superbly carved all-gold kerosang brooch set, in excellent condition, and actually less common than the diamond sets.
One pin is actually slightly different from the other. The chains are 20k gold; the brooches are 22k gold.
These kerosang pins are detachable, to wear singly, and originally intended to pass on to one or more children.
Reproduced pieces today stand apart from these original forms. In these animal or bird forms, reproduced pieces tend to be too stiff or chunky to bring alive the whimsical goodness of dandy Peranakan fashion.
Each pin measures 5cm across and 2cm tall.
