Large Green Jade Pendant Donut

Fine jadeite jade carving in the form of a two-in-one disc amulet.

A large full green jadeite disc is uncommon.

Historically, the 平安扣 (donut carving) is effectively an amulet of sorts, though its talismanic (peace and safety) effect has been culturally aestheticised to one of grace and wellness.

Ranging from kinship to kingship, very big carvings are associated with the kingly.

In the field of jade collectibility, this donut is peculiar for its golden specks.

These iron compounds look marvellously like gold being sprinkled onto the uniformly green jadeite, the “sa kum” effect in Cantonese.

The jade is a unique green hue with teal undertone, so ‘clean’ and dense, without lines. This is distinct from one of the stony artefacts carved from jade and sold as quick buys or souvenirs.

When jade is not valued based on translucency, it becomes harder to speak of quality, but for those who are knowledgeable in jade this is in reality a rare, soulful specimen.

The carving could either be set into jewelry, or strung with silk, the former with creative possibilities.
