Midcentury carved jade pendant set with jadeite in 20k.
The jade is set in a Straits Chinese style, dating to the ’60s or earlier.
The two tone jade is dappled, revealing a good translucency.
Taking carving motifs against its material, the jade carving is likely to date much earlier.
Even earlier jade carvings tend to be less translucent; they are mostly thinly spliced to allow the best of light to follow through, as seen in the darker green jade earrings, itself a high art skill.
Many may not be aware that the more translucent the material the greater its expanse in order to make visible its material, especially when carving is involved.
The yellow gold and diamond accent greatly complements the jade’s tone and shape, a charm of the old world that in this part of the world is more Anglo-Sino than Art Nouveau.
